The Modern Samson

Thomas Nast was a popular Republican political cartoonist in the turn of the 20th century. He is known for the modern representation of Santa as well as the Republican elephant. He created many satire political cartons many of which are classics. One of these cartons specifically I am looking at today, not because of its popularity, but rather what it includes. This carton is called "The Modern Samson" and was originally printed in the October 3rd Issue of Harpers Weekly in 1868. The carton depicts a parody of the biblical story of Samson who would loose his power if his hair was cut.

Fight the Narrative.

Many people, including myself, have gotten a renewed interest in politics since the last election. To be perfectly honest until this election cycle I was a political nut that would hibernate for 4 years at a time. However, this year is different. Not simply do to a renewed interest but rather because something happened that scared the crap out of me. I saw this country emulating Nazi Germany. Before anyone freaks out that I am comparing Obama to Hitler keep your pants on, I’m not. Not that I'm discounting that, but that’s not what this post is about. The media complex in this country reminds me of the media in places like Nazi Germany or Russia during the cold war or even North Korea today. The media is so bias that its the equivalent of media reports in Germany during World War 2 that claimed they where winning the war. Complete and total fabricated news stories that people from the outside look in with amazement wondering what evil hold they must have on there people. The ironic part was that many media reports are not fabricated but rather reported in a way to direct a narrative.

Security vs. Freedom

It’s no doubt that we live in a more dangers world today then we did a few years ago, or that the danger that was always there is just more visible to us. After the attacks of September 11th 2001 I believe a lot of Americans realized what “could” happen and the possibilities scared many. It’s at this point when something needed to be done. However, what was done, and what continues to be done in the name of national security now scares me more then the terrorist attacks did in 2001. Starting with the patriot act the government took it upon themselves to decide what rights where important and what rights where not important and when those powers can be used. This not only hurt the freedom we enjoy in America but it means the terrorists got there way, plain and simple the attack worked, it changed us.

Netbook External Antenna Mod

I have been using an Alfa AWUS036H for some time now. it's a great USB wireless card that supports injection, monitor mode, and runs 1000mW. The problem is while I can hit just about any access point I point it at the performance is horrible. I average about 2Mb on a 40Mb cable connection. Its just not acceptable. Its great for hacking but for regular use its worthless. During my playing I noticed that the Broadcom B43 card that came in my Dell mini also supports Injection and monitor mode, I can also run it at 1000mW. The Broadcom also averages around 20Mb to 30Mb download speed on my 40Mb cable connection, which isn't bad for wireless. The problem is I can't get near the coverage that I can with my Alfa. To solve this problem I have decided to add an external antenna to my internal wireless card.

Hackers are not Criminals

Its been popular in the media for decades to call any one who breaks a computer law a hacker. Not considering where the term came from or what it means, the term hacker has became synonymous with criminal.  This is so far from the truth that its actually ironic. Its because of hackers that computer criminals only get away with what they currently get away with. If it was not for hackers the damage caused by computer crimes would be much worse. Hackers get a bad wrap and the prejudice that hackers face in todays media bleeds over in life. It would be understandable if the only time this happened was with ignorant news casters but it actually effects everyone's perception of what we do. When I say I am a hacker most people grab their children and look at me like I am a bank robber. When they should see it for what it really is. I am not a criminal, I am a hacker. Theres a difference.
